Dog groomers work in a variety of settings, including independent salons, large retail pet stores, day care providers, rescue centres, and kennels, making it a versatile career path.

What will I study?

The apprenticeship provides comprehensive training in: Completing end-to-end maintenance grooming for various dog breeds and coat types. Health assessment, bathing, drying, brushing, and trimming techniques for different coat textures (wire, wool, smooth, double, silky, or combination). Nail trimming, recognizing ill health, and understanding hereditary diseases and stress indicators in dogs. Adapting grooming approaches based on life stage, behaviour, or health conditions. Customer service skills, including gathering grooming-related information from clients and providing maintenance advice. Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements, such as the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and safe working practices including biosecurity and waste disposal.

How long is the course?

The apprenticeship typically lasts 12 months, during which participants gain practical experience and industry-relevant knowledge.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment involves a combination of practical demonstrations, assignments, and evaluations, ensuring apprentices meet the required standards of competence across all areas of dog grooming.

What qualifications do I need?

Employers are looking for apprentices who have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4. Level 2 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-3 or equivalent, including Maths or English. Level 3 - 6 - A minimum of 5 GCSEs, graded 9-4 or equivalent, including Maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

Successful apprentices can advance to roles such as Dog Grooming Stylist or Salon Manager. They may also choose to start their own grooming business or pursue further specialisation and certifications in animal care/dog grooming.
