Is this course for me?

This course will suit you if you are just starting out and want to gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to move on to further study or get an entry-level job working in animal care.

What will I study?

Over the course of the course of the academic year you can study: Health and safety practices when working with animals, Assessing the physical state of animals, Moving handling and accommodating animals, Wildlife and conservation, Providing food and water to animals and Assist with the exercise of animals. This qualification requires the mandatory completion of 60 hours work experience hours.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of assessment methods as part of your level one qualification including two multiple-choice tests and five assignments which can include a mixture of written and practical work. This qualification is graded Pass/Merit/Distinction

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-2 including maths or English and science.

What can I progress onto?

A Diploma in Land-based Studies (Animal Care) could help you to get a job as a: Farm Worker (livestock), Kennel/Cattery worker or Pet Shop Assistant. Once you have completed this course you could progress onto the City and Guilds Level 2 Technical Certificate in Animal Care.

Other Information

The College works in partnership with Rice Lane, Greenslate Community Farm, Smithills Farm and Hope View Sensory Farm, where we have access to a purpose built animal farms with a variety of animals including: rabbits, ducks, geese, peacocks, guinea pigs, pigs, goats and many more. The College also has purpose built exotic and small mammal facilities, dog grooming suites and kennels. If you are 16-18 years old, you may be eligible for our FREE bus pass.
