Is this course for me?
A Nuclear Technician will have a good technical understanding of processes and procedures for the day to day operational requirements in nuclear facilities and will use the knowledge, skills and behaviours developed to carry out a broad range of technical, scientific and engineering tasks to operate systems and equipment safely, efficiently and in an environmentally sustainable way, meeting the requirements set out by the employer and industry regulators. They will be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, taking responsibility for the quality of work that is undertaken, demonstrating good team working skills and the ability to communicate in a variety of forms to all levels within an organisation. The Nuclear Technician role will be a task focussed role and will typically follow direction and instructions of the professional level. Nuclear Technicians provide all the required technical support to enable the engineers and technologists to function effectively, while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines. Nuclear Technicians solve technical problems. Under supervision they will scope and manage technical work tasks in support of a variety of engineering/science based projects. In this apprenticeship you will be learning the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be successful in your chosen role, these include being able to: Understand the concepts, principles and theories of engineering science relevant to the interdisciplinary fields of nuclear technology. Use science or engineering discipline knowledge to support the development of operation, maintenance and progression of technologies for example in Decommissioning (e.g. remote handling and robotics), Understand Waste Management, Reprocessing, and Nuclear Power Generation. How to analyse and apply the results of research and information gathering to evaluate and to propose solutions to a particular nuclear technology application. How to implement methods of determining the root cause of problems and demonstrating knowledge of learning from experience (LFE) processes. Work competently and safely in a technical nuclear environment, understand and promote personal responsibility for Health, Safety, Radiation Protection, Environmental Protection, Quality, Security, Safeguards and principles of Risk Management. Develop and write technical reports that meet business requirements including the optimisation and continuous improvement of processes and services. Accurately observe, record and draw conclusions from data and experimental evidence and presentation of findings under supervision.
How will I be assessed?
All apprentices now complete an end-point assessment to complete their qualification. This is delivered by an independent end-point assessment organisation with no affiliation to the employer or training provider. This is a national requirement and endpoint assessments are carried out by a third party assessor. End point assessments use a variety of assessment methods depending on the apprenticeship standard these can include:Professional Discussions. Interviews. Showcase portfolios. What qualifications do I need?
Typically, candidates will have achieved grade C or above in at least five GCSE's including English, Maths and a Science subject, and hold a minimum of 240 UCAS points. Other relevant or prior experience may also be considered as an alternative.
What can I progress onto?
On successful completion of the apprenticeship, a Nuclear Technician will be eligible to apply for professional registration as Engineering Technician (EngTech) or Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) by an appropriate Professional Institute regulated by the Engineering Council or Science Council. Provide progression to degree level apprenticeships and courses.
