Is this course for me?
If you are a good listener with a high degree of empathy and want to follow a career supporting others through counselling therapies, this course may be for you.On completion, you will have a sound understanding of the principles in your area of specialist study and will know how to apply those principles more widely in counselling and psychology practice.

The course is aligned to the professional body for counsellors, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)* (*subject to approval).
WORK PLACEMENTS
You will carry out a placement to develop your practice in an area of special interest, such as domestic violence, children's services or substance misuse.
Family Welfare based in Leigh Adult Learning Centre will guarantee an interview for placement.
INDUSTRY RELEVANT
Tutors are experienced counselling practitioners qualified to Masters degree level and members of professional bodies. They will share their knowledge and experience with you to help you develop your own personal practice.

What will I study?
You will gain a wide range of knowledge linked to practical skills gained through research, independent study, directed study and workplace and clinic scenarios.
In the second year you will specialise in a counselling-related occupational area. You will develop and apply your own ideas to studies, to deal with uncertainty and complexity, to explore solutions, demonstrate critical evaluation and use theory and practice in a wide range of therapeutic situations.

How will I be assessed?
You will also be assessed during your placement.
You may be required to produce a practice learning and development portfolio.
What qualifications do I need?
• GCSE or equivalent 9-4 including English and Maths
• Where English is not your first language, the English Language requirement is: CEFR Level B2 / PTE Academic 51 / IELTS 5.5
• Successful interview process to include panel interview and written piece of work.
• You must have a satisfactory DBS.
What can I progress onto?
• an independent counsellor
• a counsellor in a service or agency setting
• a mental health coach
• a cognitive behavioural (CBT) therapist.
• you may also secure careers as a disability specialist, behaviour technician or child protection practitioner.
Full honours degrees
You may progress to another year of study at Level 6 to specialise further in your chosen therapeutic area or you could progress into social work.
Other Information
You will study in a small group with lots of contact time with tutors.
Course Fees
16-18 year olds do not pay exam fees.
Course fees shown are per annum for University Centre courses. Courses lasting longer than one year, fees will be payable per year.
