What will I study?

A Level Fine Art encourages you to develop artistic skills, creativity, critical thinking, and knowledge of the art world. You will produce your own creative work, while studying the work of artists and art movements.

You will study the following areas:

Practical Studio Work: You will spend a significant amount of time working in the studio, exploring various media, techniques, and processes. You will create artwork in response to a series of projects, developing skills and expressing ideas visually.

Investigating and Experimenting: This involves research, exploration, and experimentation with different materials, styles, and approaches. You will investigate the work of artists and explore new artistic concepts and themes.

Critical and Contextual Studies: Study the work of different artists, art movements and historical and contemporary art contexts. Learn how to analyse and critically evaluate artworks, discussing their influences and significance.

Personal Investigation: In the second year you will undertake a personal investigation, which involves in-depth research and exploration of a chosen topic or theme. You will produce a body of artwork and a written component that explains their creative process and contextualizes your work.

How long is the course?

Full-time for two academic years.

How will I be assessed?

Through a combination of coursework and practical exams

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-5 including English, Maths and an Art based subject and 2 GCSE subjects graded 9-6.

What can I progress onto?

You may progress to study at a Russell group university for degrees in Fine Art or Illustration.

Other Information

You will benefit from a range of extra qualifications, work placements, voluntary work and masterclasses, delivered by industry experts.

Options include:

Visits to galleries in Manchester, Liverpool and London as well as Yorkshire Sculpture park.
