Is this course for me?

If you love reading, writing, or both then A Level English Language & Literature is the subject for you.

What will I study?

You will further your passion, challenge yourself, and develop subject expertise, by engaging creatively, critically and independently with a wide range of exciting texts such as: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, poems by Robert Browning and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams.

You will analyse this wide range of texts, gaining insights into the nature of different uses of language and ideas about creativity. You will develop skills as producers and interpreters of language, by creating your own texts and critically reflecting on your own processes of production. The texts you study focus on how writers use language to tell stories of different worlds and perspectives, ideas of conflict between people and societies, and making active connections between texts.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years.

How will I be assessed?

Through a combination of written exams and practical assessments.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-5 including Maths and 2 GCSE subjects graded 9-6 including English or an essay based subject such as History

What can I progress onto?

You may progress to study at a Russell group university for a degree in a related subject.

Other Information

You will benefit from a range of extra qualifications, work placements, voluntary work and masterclasses, delivered by industry experts.

Options include:

A visit to Shakespeare Theatre North and Haworth Bronte Parsonage. Trips to libraries to hear poetry speakers. Guest talks and workshops from local and national authors. Opportunity to become a blog writer and get published right from the start of your course.
