Is this course for me?

If you are technically minded, good at maths and science, and like solving problems, a professional career in engineering could be a great move for you. Mechanical Engineers develop and design components and machinery used in many industries like manufacturing, construction, water, power, health and transport. They also manage teams of technicians and craftspeople, who carry out installation and maintenance work. Our courses are designed to develop the practical skills and knowledge required to enter employment in this diverse sector, or progress to university level study. This qualification is aimed at learners who intend to follow a career progression within the Engineering industry and wish to develop the skills learnt from other qualifications. You can progress on to a Higher Level course at our University Centre or other University institutions

What will I study?

The course covers a wide range of engineering subjects and activities including workshop skills such as using hand tools and machines, making and testing electronic circuits, engineering materials, engineering mathematics and science. The course is divided into a number of units which are assessed using a variety of methods including practical activities, assignments and tests. You will study the advanced level and principles of engineering which include machining materials by turning, milling and grinding, CNC machining of materials and detailed fitting of materials.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

You will be required to complete practical tasks, course work and assignments.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths or English or successful completion of a L2 PEO qualification..

What can I progress onto?

You can progress on to a Higher Apprenticeship or study on our University Centre Higher Level HND in Engineering. Mechanical Engineers can expect to earn between £22 and £55k a year. Other career prospects include Aerospace Engineers, Aerospace Engineering Technicians, CAD Technicians CNC Machinists, Engineering Craft Machinists, Design and Development Engineers, Materials Engineers, Engineer Operatives.
