Is this course for me?

If you love cars and enjoy fixing things, this could be a great career for you. Motor vehicle technicians repair and service cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches. They work on all vehicle mechanics and electrics, from engines and exhaust systems to air-conditioning and security. You will need to be good at problem-solving and finding faults. You will also work with people and develop excellent customer service skills. These courses will provide you with the practical skills to begin a career as a trainee motor vehicle technician. Students wanting to develop some of the key skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. Successful course applicants will have the basic skills needed to apply for an automotive apprenticeship or similar engineering pathway.

What will I study?

The course has seven units of study to complete, the unit titles include; Routine light vehicle maintenance, lubrication and cooling systems, removing and replacing light vehicle electrical units and components, removing and replacing chassis units and components, vehicle inspection using prescribed methods, transmission and driveline units and components and knowledge of fuel, ignition, air and exhaust system units and components.

How long is the course?

Full time for one academic year

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is on going throughout the course and there are also end of module online tests for each unit.

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-3 or equivalent including maths or English.

What can I progress onto?

To the Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles, subject to course requirements being met.

Other Information

If you are 16-18 years old, you may be eligible for our FREE bus pass. Safety boots and overalls will be required for all practical activities.
