Is this course for me?

Whether you want to enhance your sporting expertise, maximise your coaching ability, or improve your officiating skills, we can help you at our Centre of Excellence in Sport. You will develop an understanding of the sporting infrastructure from grassroots through to elite level and what makes the UK one of the top sporting nations in the world. You will have access to a multimillion pound sporting complex at Leigh Sports Village, which includes a swimming pool, gymnasium, athletics stadium and 3G AstroTurf pitches. You will be encouraged to lead an active and healthy life and get involved in our sports teams, whether your interests are in football or rugby. We have enjoyed huge success in both our mens and womens teams and we would be delighted to welcome you to join us. This course has been specially designed for those students who are interested in sports development, coaching and fitness and want to deepen and broaden their knowledge. Practical assessment includes organising and delivering events for local schools. You may also take the Level 2 Award in the Principles of Coaching Sport and the Community Sports Leadership Award.

What will I study?

You will develop your knowledge in: Anatomy for Sport and Exercise, Sport and Exercise Physiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Research Methods for Sport and Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise, Massage, Sports Injuries, Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise, Analysis of Sport Performance, Sports Biomechanics.

How long is the course?

Full time for two academic years

How will I be assessed?

By a variety of continuous assessments, both practical and written. Learners will also undertake two externally assessed units each year of the course

What qualifications do I need?

A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects graded 9-4 or equivalent including maths and English.

What can I progress onto?

Following completion of Level 3, you may progress to the HND Sport and Exercise Science at Wigan & Leigh College, study a sport related degree at university, or secure employment. A highly experienced Sports Coach can earn £30,000- £35,000 a year. A fully qualified Sport Scientist with a degree, working at a high level of competitive sport, can earn over £60,000 on average a year. Other careers include Professional Sportsperson, Athlete, Sport Psychologist, Personal Trainer, Performance Analyst, Physiotherapist, Sport Nutritionist and Teacher.

16-18 year olds do not pay exam fees.
