Is this course for me?

This course is for you if you are looking for an exciting and rewarding career nurturing and guiding children and young people through their learning and development. It is relevant for those who have little previous experience but have the passion and commitment to train and qualify as a Teaching Assistant. The course is suitable for those aged 19 and above.

What will I study?

The course will be delivered via classroom based activities and practical assessment within the school environment. You will study topics such as Child and Young Person Development, Safeguarding, Communication and Professional Relationships, Equality and Diversity, Improving team practice, Health and safety, Supporting positive behaviour and Supporting learning activities.

How long is the course?

The course runs for 15 weeks. You will attend College for 5 hours per week and must be employed, or a voluntary placement in a school for 10 hours per week.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment criteria are internally assessed within College and the work placement via practical methods for example observations by the College Tutor, witness statements and personal reflection.

What qualifications do I need?

Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy, although arrangements can be made to study for these qualifications within the year. You will need to have secured a work placement of at least 10 hours per week.

What can I progress onto?

The Certificate can assist in securing employment as a Teaching Assistant, or alternatively allow progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Other Information

You will receive support from a competent, approachable team of staff, who all have experience of working in a classroom environment. You will require a clear DBS disclosure.

Course fees shown are per annum for University Centre courses. Courses lasting longer than one year, fees will be payable per year.
