100 per cent of students at the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College say that teaching staff are good at explaining things, according to results published in the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS).

Graduates from the University Centre, which delivers higher education courses based at Wigan & Leigh College, were more positive than the student sector average across all of the question groupings (Teaching on my Course, Learning Opportunities, Academic Support, Assessment and Feedback, Organisation and Management, Learning Resources and Student Voice).

This year’s results improved significantly from last year.

Students rated their Academic support 98 per cent, the Teaching on their course 96 per cent and Learning opportunities 92 per cent.

The National Student Survey seeks the views of final-year undergraduate students across the UK every year. The survey results help higher education providers continuously evaluate, improve and benchmark the courses they offer, and it helps to inform prospective student decisions about where to study.

Ursula Hoyles, Head of Higher Education at the University Centre, said:

“These outstanding results show how committed colleagues are in delivering the best possible teaching for our students.I’m delighted that students have recognised the excellence of our teaching and support and that they rate us higher than the average in all categories surveyed.”

The NSS is a nationwide survey of final-year students in higher and further education. They answer questions on a variety of aspects of their university experience, including their department and course.

Teaching staff also did well with responses to individual questions about how well they supported learning and how easy it was to contact them, scoring 98 per cent for both.

Ursula Hoyles added:

“Each year we see an improvement in our ratings. There’s no better accolade for our teaching and support than the lived experience of students themselves.Thank you to all the teaching staff that go above and beyond to make the student experience so positive.”
