Foundation Degree Sport students from Leigh College delivered an action-packed Sports Leadership Masterclass to pupils from Fred Longworth High School.

Forty one Year 9 pupils visited the College’s Centre of Excellence in Sport for a carousel of activities designed by the higher education students focusing on becoming an effective leader.

The young people all study on the Cambridge Nationals Sports Studies Level1/2 award at the Leigh-based school and this masterclass will help to enhance their skills and learning.

A combination of Year 1 and 2 Foundation Degree Sports students completed a practice event the week before and had meticulously planned the delivery of the Young Sports Leaders award.

This award will be given to each pupil after they demonstrated their skills and learning which will stand them in good stead ahead of visits to local primary schools when it will be their turn to lead a session for young children.

Sports Lecturer and Quality Co-ordinator, Rebecca Armstrong said: “It is great to see our degree students passing on their knowledge and helping to develop leadership and employability skills to the next generation of sports leaders.”

The Masterclass consisted of lots of fun and engaging activities that incorporated eight key principles: fun, activity, safety, teamwork, participants, area, communication and equipment needed.

All these factors contribute to becoming an effective leader showing that the individual can be prepared, organised and lead a session effectively.

Fred Longworth High School Head of Year, Simon Rigby added: “We had a great day with Leigh College Sports Degree students who were a credit. Our students had a great time.”
