A local teacher is heading off to Liberia, Africa to test her skills and knowledge in a completely different learning environment.

Diane Flynn, Teacher Education tutor at The University Centre Wigan & Leigh College will be swapping her current state-of-the-art classroom facilities for a slightly more basic one over summer.

Diane recently joined the University Centre Wigan & Leigh College in May of this year, but wanted to also combine this new opportunity with something different and test her abilities in challenging surroundings.

The teaching professional came across an advert for charity Street Child UK, who specialise in providing sustainable solutions and working in some of the poorest areas of the world to empower children through education.

The teacher will travel out during the summer holidays with a small group of likeminded educators to a remote village in the West African country, where they will sleep and live for their two week duration and even have to take bucket showers.

Liberia was hit by the Ebola epidemic in 2014, which came after years of brutal civil war and now has the highest proportion of out-of-school primary-aged children in the world.

While out there, Diane will be teaching session planning and behaviour management to local teachers in a newly built school.

Diane said: “I am looking forward to the challenge. I want to see if I can deliver teacher education without any resources or technology.”
